The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) announced Tuesday a 30% reduction in deaths due to measles worldwide between 1999 and 2002.
In a joint press release, the two UN agencies noted that this reduction had reached 35% in Africa, the region with the most people affected by this disease.
This progress is due to the adoption by the countries most affected of a comprehensive WHO / UNICEF, which consists of an opening vaccinnale routine at least 80% of children, says the press release.
This strategy, which spends about $ 140 million, helped immunize more than 145 million children during the period 1999-2002 in 21 of the 45 countries most affected.
These developments show, the statement said that the international community can achieve the target set by the UN to halve the total number of deaths from measles by the end of 2005.
However, WHO and UNICEF were requested not to relax vigilance because measles remained the leading cause of preventable death among children.
