MM. Koizumi and Bush reaffirmed the Japanese-American alliance

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and U.S. President George W. Bush reaffirmed the importance of Japanese-American alliance in global stability in messages made public Saturday in Yokohama to mark the 150th anniversary of signing the first treaty between the two countries.

The treaty is also the first that Japan has signed with a Western country.

“Our alliance is the basis for stability and regional prosperity in Asia and the Pacific,” Koizumi said during a ceremony at the port of Yokohama, where the Treaty of Kanagawa was signed in 1854.

Koizumi described the cooperative bilateral relations as “deep and solid” in resolving issues such as the reconstruction of Iraq, NHK reported.

Mr. Bush said in a video message that the alliance “brought peace, stability and hope for a better future” for the people of both countries and the world.

The treaty, known in Japan as the Treaty of Peace and Friendship with the United States, was signed March 31, 1854.

Under this treaty, Japan opened two ports to the United States, granting the security protection of the marine boats sunk U.S., leading to the establishment of a permanent consulate, and a gorge of the nation more favored.

Japan then concluded similar treaties with Great Britain the same year, with Russia in 1855, and with the Netherlands in 1856.

A ceremony was held in Washington last Wednesday at the National Archives.
