End of the visit of the first Chinese astronaut to UN
Yang Liwei, China’s first astronaut said Monday that his visit to the United Nations has strengthened its exchanges with foreign astronauts and astronautical organizations.
Yang made the remarks in an interview at the Beijing airport.
Yang and the delegation of the manned space program of China have returned to Beijing after their visit to the headquarters of the UN in New York and Department of Space of the UN in Austria.
Hu Shixiang, head of the delegation and deputy director of manned space program, said the visit showed great achievements in China’s manned space program.
The visit also demonstrates the Chinese government’s support to international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space under the UN mechanism and its willingness to conduct exchanges with other countries in astronautics program, said Hu.
It is also important for the Chinese government and the United Nations to strengthen their cooperation in outer space and the manned space program, “he added.
The delegation paid the visit at the invitation of Secretary General, Kofi Annan.
Besides visits to aeronautic museums and space centers, the delegation also met with several former U.S. astronauts.
