A special station was established here Friday to provide consulting services to prisoners, said an official of the municipal authority in prison.

The station will operate as a non-profit organization to protect the legitimate rights of prisoners and it will appoint legal experts and lawyers to undertake this task, the source said.

The station will serve about 7 000 prisoners in the Qinghe branch of the municipal authority in prison.

Thanks to services, the first of its kind in Beijing, the prisoners have access to legal consultation and professional proposals, said Zhang Xiaokun, vice president and senior judge of the Court of the Xuanwu District of Beijing.

Moreover, the station will oversee the daily management of prisoners and remain in contact with the families of prisoners to them about their reactions, said Zhang.
