Pyongyang wants a consensus on the first phase of action during the six-party talks

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea) said Tuesday that participants in the second round of talks on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula should at least try to reach a consensus on the first phase of action of “simultaneous application package,” whose essence is a “verbal commitment” and “freezing the nuclear program for compensation.

In a written interview with Xinhua, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK said that his country would freeze its nuclear program unless it got compensation simultaneously.

“If it is proposed to freeze first and compensate later, we resolutely oppose it,” insisted the spokesman.

“This would mean that the talks were deadlocked and that would be good for either party,” he added.

“If the U.S. maintains its request for abandonment of nuclear screening by trying to use the nuclear issue to their strategic goals, this question can never be resolved, and Americans will destroy the basis of dialogue” warned the spokesman.

The six-party talks (U.S., North Korea, South Korea, Japan, China, Russia) on Pyongyang’s nuclear program must be open for at least three days in Beijing Wednesday
