Ministerial Conference on the Nile waters Thursday in Nairobi
The environment ministers from ten African countries will gather here Thursday for a two-day conference aimed at ensuring a better distribution of Nile waters.
Organizers said the Nairobi meeting is better cooperation between different countries crossed by the river to stop the deterioration of relations with Eastern Africa Cairo.
At a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Nile region, senior officials of various countries have hoped that Egypt would reverse a 1929 treaty with Great Britain on behalf of its colonies in East Africa and after which Egypt has sole control of virtually all waters of the Nile, which runs through ten countries yet.
Before this meeting, Cairo had called on all countries upstream of the river to better conservation of rainwater, indicating he would not abandon its “historical rights” on the Nile.
Under this treaty, Egypt has a veto him to oppose any large-scale use of river water.
Thursday’s meeting is part of a series of conferences organized by the Initiative of the Nile Basin in order to ensure cooperation in the management of river water and thus promote economic and regional security.
