Uruguayan President Jorge Batlle in Montevideo Tuesday received an economic and trade delegation led by Chinese Liao Xiaoqi, Vice Minister of Commerce.

President Batlle said that his country, a friend of China, was delighted to see a sustainable development of Chinese economy and expressed the wish to further promote economic cooperation and trade between the two countries.

An active role of Chinese companies in the construction of Uruguay will be encouraged, he added.

For his part, Mr. Liao expressed the gratitude of the Chinese government for its support by Uruguay to China in international affairs in recent years.

China and Uruguay, he said, are friendly countries and their economic and trade cooperation has achieved a stable development.

Bilateral trade has experienced an increase of 17.5% in 2003 over the previous year, said Mr. Liao, adding that they still enjoyed a great potential for development due to strong mutual complementarity two economies.
