A cloned cow gives birth in a small eastern China

The cloned cow “Fu Fu” gave birth Wednesday to a calf in the province of Shandong in eastern China. The Calf “Xing Xing”, 80 cm long and 80 cm high, weighs 39 kg.

All physical evidence, including heartbeat, temperature and respiration were normal, according to technologists.

Wei Qiang, head of the technical team, said the birth of Xing Xing has proved that the cloned cow had a normal reproductive capacity.

Scientists at the Research Institute of Zoology under the Academy of Sciences conduct a study of somatic cloning since 2001.

The first 12 calves cloned by this technique were born in January 2002.

Fu Fu, one of five survivors, is pregnant in June. The other four are also down and will in the near future.
