Increase of 60.3% of websites in China in 2003

China had 600 000 web sites approved in late 2003, an increase of 60.3% over the previous year, said a report released Thursday by the Informatization Office of the Council of State Affairs.

The report on Internet resources in China in 2003, the third of its kind, was written by the Center for Information Network of the China Internet.

Some 90% of Internet sites were located in the eastern provinces, north and south, indicating a growing gap between rich regions and underdeveloped regions, the report said.

The number of websites in Beijing, Guangdong Province (China, south) of Zhejiang Province (east) and Shanghai accounted for 56.8% of the total, occupying the first four places in the country.

China were also 17 000 databases online, double the previous year.
