BBC adopts rules of journalism more stringent following the Hutton report

The British television BBC announced it would introduce new rules of journalism and complaint procedures.

The director of the BBC, Mark Thompson, announced Wednesday that measures taken following the report by Lord Hutton who had strongly criticized the chain for his reporting on the justifications for the war in Iraq.

The report by journalist Andrew Gilligan quoted a source on condition of anonymity, accused the government of Tony Blair of intentionally “inflated” the issue of weapons of mass destruction to justify the Iraq war. The identity of this source, the weapons expert David Kelly had been disclosed by the Government in July 2003, leading Mr. Kelly to suicide.

In its report last January, Mr Hutton described the report as “baseless” and strongly criticized the BBC for its attitude.

In the days following the publication of the Hutton report, the chairman of the board of directors of the BBC Gavyn Davies and director general Greg Dyke had resigned, and Andrew Gilligan.

Ronald Neil, former head of the BBC channel which had entrusted the task of conducting an internal investigation and set new rules for journalists, concluded that the BBC should continue to make reports based on a single source only when the subject is of significant interest to the public and when the correct procedures were followed.
