Sheikh Ghazi al-Yawar, Iraq’s new President
Ghazi al-Yawar, a tribal leader and a successful businessman, was elected Tuesday by the Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) as the first head of the Iraqi state after Saddam Hussein.
He accepted this position after the octogenarian Adnan Pachachi, supported by the United States, has refused such an offer earlier Tuesday. But if Saddam Hussein concentrated in this position all the powers, the interim constitution adopted by the Iraqi executive in March gave the new president a more ceremonial function.
Al-Yawar, 46, was not a name known to the Iraqis before he was elected president running the CGI for the month of June, the last month before the transfer of power. He took office of President of CGI in mid-May after the murder of his colleague Ezzedin Salim May 17 in Baghdad.
Mr. Al-Yawar is now a “TV star” through many interviews with Iraqi and foreign channels during the last three weeks. He has demonstrated his ability to win hearts and minds of Iraqis, which allowed him to become a man of match for Mr. Pachachi, an experienced politician and a major opponent for the presidency of Iraq.
The new Iraqi president was a leader of Shammar, one of the largest tribes in Iraq, and some of its neighbors, including Saudi Arabia.
Born in 1958 and eldest among four brothers in his family, Mr. Al - Yawar has finished his primary and secondary in Mosul in northern Iraq, where he currently resides.
He received his license to the University of Petroleum and Mineral Engineering in Saudi Arabia. Then he entered George Washington University in the U.S. capital and reccueilli a Masters in Civil Engineering. He then moved to Saudi Arabia where he opened a thriving telecommunications company before returning to his country.
In 1900, when Saddam Hussein’s army invaded Kuwait, which borders Iraq, Mr. al-Yawar was chosen exile in London to mark his disapproval. He returned to his homeland after the fall of Saddam and was elected member of the IGC in July 2003.
Mr. Al-Yawar is married with three sons, the eldest is 18 years.
